2017 Packing Shed - Grenache, Mataro & Shiraz
88 Points – James Suckling
A well-integrated and harmonious blend of Grenache (38%), Mataro (37%) and Shiraz (25%). Crimson red in colour, with lifted savoury, five-spice, red cherry and smoked meat aromas makes for a complex and intriguing bouquet. The palate is full flavoured and plush with rounded finishing, excellent texture and length.
A blend of wine from vineyards located in three distinct sub- regions of McLaren Vale. The Grenache is from the Seaview Vineyard on Olivers Road, Mataro from the Oliveto Vineyard located in the Sellicks foothills and Shiraz from the Wait Family Vineyard on the top of the Seaview Rise. Each vineyard is hand manicured, low yielding and managed sustainably.
Handpicked and sorted, 75% was destemmed with 25% whole bunch clusters included into the fermenter. Cold soaked for five days at 8oC in open-topped fermenters, the fruit was left to then naturally warm prior to starting fermentation. The wine was hand plunged for 18 days before being pressed off straight to seasoned oak barrels for maturation on yeast lees. The wine was matured unhindered for six months prior to being blended and bottled. This wine was naturally clarified prior to being bottled without finings or filtration.
